History Of Department

Nutrition and Dietetics are basis to all developmental programs. Nutrition is a branch of science devoted to the study of nutrients. It spans a broad ranging area overlapping with many other disciplines including Biochemistry, Microbiology, Food, science, Dietetics, Medicine and Public health. Dietitians explain the dietetic care needed during the periods and stages of life and the specific diet therapy for several disease conditions. An understanding of nutritional needs, wise choice of foods without prejudice and adoption of desirable methods of cooking and processing would go a long way in improving the nutritional status of the community at large.

B.Sc. Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics was started in the year 1998 with UGC Sponsorship. This continued for a period of five years. After that the course was restarted as a self financing course. Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics degree programmes prepare the students for positions in performance, training, culinary research, or holistic health practices. The objective of the department is to improve the well being of those patients with clinically related nutrition problems, by assessing nutritional status and individual requirements, implementing a plan of care, monitoring progress and evaluating the outcome of the intervention.

Every year the students of this course secure university ranks and almost all students who had completed the degree course on Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics are very well placed in hospitals, nursing care instituted and offices of physicians or other health practitioners, in food companies and in clinical nutrition products sales and marketing in India and abroad. Apart from this the course is effective in every field of life. Realising the above said facts, the students as well as public demanded for the post graduate course on clinical nutrition and dietetics.

Based on these demands a general body constituting the members of P.T.A. and management was held and decided to apply for a post graduate course on clinical nutrition and dietetics. The application along with syllabus was submitted to the university. A committee deputed by the university inspected the facilities in the department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics. Thereafter a core committee of the university approved the syllabus and later the government granted permission for the commencement of the post graduate course. It was commenced on 1st day of November 2004.

The department conducts extension programmes in nearby villages, hospitals and various institutions. The programmes proved to be beneficial for the various target groups.
