Alphonsa College - About Us

Alphonsa CollegeTucked  away  from  the  madding  crowd,  by  the  banks  of  River Meenachil  lies  Alphonsa College, Pala, one  of  the  premier  institutions  for higher education of women in the state of Kerala. It perpetuates the sacred memory of Saint Alphonsa, the contemplative  mystic  who  was  elevated  to  Sainthood by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on 12 October 2008. The life of Saint Alphonsa, radiating the fragrance of love, service and sacrifice has always been a perennial source of inspiration and strength for the people around Pala.

Alphonsa College owes its genesis to the vibrant vision, wisdom, benefaction and magnificent   philanthropy  of   Mar  Sebastian   Vayalil,   the first  Bishop  of  Pala. Established  in  1964  as  a  Junior  College  with  400  students  and  13  teachers, the  college  has  now  attained  the status of  a First Grade women’s college. It is a   standing   monument   of   the   far-sightedness  and  pioneering  leadership  of  the   trailblazer   late     Mar   Sebastian   Vayalil,   Founder-Patron  of the  college.   Though   advanced   in   several  respects,  this  area  lacked  in  facilities  for  women’s  education.  Fully convinced of the fact that total development and progress of a society is possible only through the education of women, His Excellency took a bold step and started a women’s college  in Pala with the support of several eminent leaders of the locality. The saga that began forty years back scaled the heights of excellence and became one of the most prestigious institutions in the educational scenario, leaving a trail of glory behind.
